Change Fail

SEPTAchangeFAIL
I've used the damn token machines - when they're a) actually at the station and b) working and have never gotten change in nickels before, but not Michelle. She writes...

Yesterday I was lucky enough to find an out-of-station token machine that was actually working. The sign told me that 10 dollars would buy me "6 tokens and change," so I slipped in the bill.

My change was in NICKELS.

(I shouldn't complain, right? I suppose it could be worse... But if SEPTA switches to pennies, I might totally lose it.)

That's 26 nickels in her hand.

Did I miss the notice from the US Mint that nickels are no longer valid currency? Not sure that I would call that a failure.

I would urge you monitor closely as SEPTA inches closer to making decisions on its new fare payment systems and methods....there will be opportunity for public comment....work on your ideas and comments now.

  2. The other day I took Elliott on a transit ride. On the return, we walked down into the Septa station @ 30th St. $5.80 buys 4 tokens. So I put in 6 dollars, got my four token, and NO change.

Spoke to the attendant and she said she could fill out a form and send it to Septa and they'd send me a check for $0.20 but it was really just not worth the trouble. I wonder how much money Septa makes off mistakes like that.

  3. One day, I put $6 into the token machine at the Tasker/Morris Station, figuring I would get 4 tokens and 20 cents change. The instructions say "insert $5 for three tokens and 65 cents change." This was one of the machines that only takes paper money, not coins and apparently it will only distribute a certain amount of tokens as well, because it spit back 3 tokens and $1.65 in nickels as well.

  4. I've gotten change in all nickels before more than once. I've also gotten plenty of dollar coins that weigh down my pocket along with the antiquated tokens. But at least the machines can make change, unlike the attendants.

  5. I'm surprised those motherfuckers even know how many nickels add up to the change amount.
