Rider Rant: Steve

Another rider, Steve, writing in about that pesky Spring Garden MFL station...

I live next to the Spring Garden station, and many times, as recent as last 2:30 pm Friday, I walked up the stairs to see a line of about 8-10 people just standing next to the booth. Apparently, there wasn't even an attendant (and by attendant, I mean "a person who's sole job is to take two $1 bills from people and press a button) in the booth! There was an elderly man, clearly confused as to what he's supposed to do, asking people behind him in line what he's supposed to do. I eventually excused myself up the line, peeked inside the booth, saw there was no one inside, and helped him under the turnstile. Everyone else eventually followed suit, either hopping over or crawling under the turnstile. Was the attendant taking a bathroom break? Where was his cover? Wouldn't a token machine at this station eliminate the need for toll jumpers? Perhaps a card, much like NYC MetroCard, that you can purchase with a (gasp!) debit card or a (double gasp!) credit card, that you swipe at the turnstile, instead of a quaint little 20th century token? I digress. essentially, SEPTA lost $16-$20 in those several minutes. I wonder how much it loses everyday, at everyday station in it's system because of situations like these?

Have you ever been forced to jump/duck the turnstile because there was no booth person there and there was no token machine?

  1. After seeing a movie at the Bourse, my girlfriend and I went to catch the MFL from 5th street. The attendant was asleep! It was about 10:30 and we just hopped the turnstile. A free ride back to school. Not a bad deal

  2. i once got on the broad st night owl bus and saw that the token slot had a sign over it that read "broken - no tokens!" so, i tried to hand my token to the driver and she asked me, "what am i supposed to do with that?" i asked her how i was supposed to pay, so she responded, "the machine's broken! everyone rides for free!" and i remember thinking to myself, "well maybe that's how mass transit should be!"

  3. I've only ever once jumped the turnstile, at 11th Street heading toward Frankford. It was about 10:30pm, and although the gates were open, but there were no attendants on either side of the station. I slipped through, along with 3 other people, rather than walking down to 8th Street.

  4. I jumped the turnstile at Cecil B. Moore because the train was coming and the line to get tokens was too long. I'm pretty sure there was an attendant there too

  5. i have jumped the turnstyle many a night @ the broad & oregon stop. seems the too-lazy-to-get-up-and-walk-to-the-bathroom attendant (i've witnessed her wheel herself to the bathroom on her chair) regularly takes bathroom breaks at 6pm - conveniently when i am boarding the train and since she leaves with no cover, i am forced to jump. it's a free ride, so i'm not complaining.

  7. I once boarded the Broad Street Line at Fairmount Station on a Saturday evening around 7pm heading southbound. The attendant was closing up when I asked about buying a token or two. He said that he was closed already and wasn't selling any more. I asked what I was suppose to do, he said just go through the turnstile. Once again, I got another free ride on the SEPTIC System.

  8. Steve was probably also walking up the stairs rather than taking the escalator due to the fact that it is ALWAYS broken at that stop.

  9. There's a lot of so-called fare-jumping at MFL 40th Street station whenever they have one of their infamous West Philly shutdowns (bus substitutions) to/from 69th street. I guess they take for granted that everyone is using the subway from a different point along the line.

  10. 2nd street El station - the attendant was on a bathroom break, and i had a transfer. She did leave a note instructing people without tokens to just use the accesible gate, she left it unlocked. So I didn't even need to jump the turnstile!
